I have been waiting a long time to blog about this shoot since I did it months ago in the summer... reason being that I wanted to wait until I had all of the films developed as well as having edited the digital shots. Having just got the photos back today, I couldn't resist extending a good 3 days worth of procrastination and scanned them in straight away. I'm supposed to be packing for the big London move on Thursday, but of course it's the last thing I can be bothered to do right now. I've even taken up knitting, and I've made myself a lovely pair of fingerless mittens!

Anyway, about the shoot. I met Hrefna, my lovely model, on Flickr months before the shoot when I noticed a beautiful set of photos taken of her, and expressed my interest in photographing her. She seemed very keen, and we agreed to meet the next time I was in Iceland. We went to a gorgeous spot just outside of Reykjavik, and I took an insane amount of photos. I was obsessed with her ridiculously long blonde hair, and got a little bit carried away with all the hair flicks. It was a good day, Hrefna was so easy to work with, and took direction really well so I can't wait to work with her again.

A BIG thank you, to both Hrefna and her lovely Mum who graciously volunteered to assist me on the shoot (mainly by sheilding my camera from the elements).

A few days ago I went to the Tate modern, and for the first time I gave myself time to look at all of the free exhibitions on all of the floors...which, given the immensity of the gallery, took up nearly the whole day. I had a really good day exploring and getting inspired, and left feeling tired but extremely happy. Before exiting, we stopped by the shop (which provides one of the best collection of art books for sale), and with little money to spare, picked up a little Taschen book called Pierre et Gilles, Sailors & Sea for an incredible £3. I've never heard of this duo, and nor do I recognise any of their work, but I'm left feeling completely fascinated by it. I'm having a hard time deciding whether it's unnervingly tacky, or pure gold...but I suppose conceptually it is supposed to be both.

With reoccurring themes like religion, commercial culture, and homo eroticism, the pair have created a whole heap of bold, heavily retouched, colourful, glittering imagery. (Yes, it actually appears to glitter in it's 2d form.) It is impossible to imagine how much work will have gone into each photograph, and I'm completely puzzled by the processes they use. On one hand, I know they are photos, but on the other they look like airbrushed paintings, or even sculptures or dolls. I suppose their work reminds me of LaChapelle, and they will have no doubt been an inspiration to him, but other than that I see it as truly unique. (Unless I just haven't done my research properly that is.)

On another note, I've been listening to the new Sunset Rubdown album (Dragon Slayer) constantly for the last couple of days, and I love it so much. I am going a bit crazy, and I should stop listening to it so much before I get bored of it, but it's just too good. I also happen to be seeing them on the 15th Sept in London, so if anyone is a fan.. it's a great opportunity to go see some Canadian sweetness.

Marilyn Minter, you can do no wrong. I have to see the full version of this video somehow.. it's so beautiful and gross, and provokes so many senses.

I just love the idea of creating short videos to really capture photographic moments in a different way, and it's something I've been wanting to do for a really long time. When I get hold of some equipment I'd like to start a series of video 'snap shots' to experiment with...I'd like to see how it pushes my work. Sometimes I look at other photographers work and I see that there's something they do to evoke emotion and energy, and I feel like my work just doesn't stand a chance. For instance, last night I was browsing through my photographer bookmarks, and I rediscovered the work of Linus Ricard, and I just fell in love with it's attention to detail, and intensity all over again. I took the time to view his video gallery too, which I would usually have passed by, and I was blown away. Everything this man touches is stunning. Here is one of the videos I found.. it's not my favourite of the lot, but it's still pretty magnificent:

Another one of my favourite photographers Camille Vivier has also set her sights on doing video works, and although they are somewhat different, I really love the abstraction she obtains, which really compliments her photographic style. She has produced a few short (short) films that can be viewed here.

I suppose it's not an unnatural step to take for a photographer, but I am surprised at how many I can think of off the top of my head who have ventured this way. I like the way it's going...and I'd like to see a lot more.

A very sad day

I am absolutely gutted that I've just watched my last episode of Freaks and Geeks ever... I know it probably wasn't the most well produced show (although what do I know), but I still can't believe it didn't get more than one season. I know I'm in my 20s and should probably be worrying about more important things, or even not watching TV shows aimed at kids.. but that's escapism for you.

All I know is that I now want to marry Jason Segel, and that my life will not be complete without knowing whether Lindsay gets back together with Nick... dilemma!

Finally finally reunited with my scanner.. here are some photos from this summer, and a couple of snaps from my shoot with Amy months ago. These are all taken with my film SLR, but I'm working on finding another snapshot camera that compares to my lost Minolta..I of course have had no luck. It's not so easy to carry an SLR around everywhere, and it doesn't make super quick snapping very easy.

I found that a lot of the photos from these sets came out really grainy, even when using 200-400 films, and I can't really think why. Is it the camera, the film, or some mistake I've made??

These will look much better on my flickr once I've uploaded them....

Goodbye Iceland

I have like no time to write this, but I wanted to say something on my last night in Iceland!

These 9 weeks have gone incredibly slow, yet somehow really fast... funny how that works isn't it. I can't say I've been very creatively productive, but I have been very busy. I learned how to drive, I earned me some money (which disappeared when I went to exchange my ISKs into GBPs today at the bank) and gave blood for the first time.

I did do one photo shoot a couple days ago with a lovely young lady, but I'm not going to post anything on here until I have edited all the photos I liked, and had my films developed. I'm pretty happy with them though, and I hope people will enjoy them. My biggest worry is that the films won't look good, as I do have NINE to process. Basically, I have a whole mountain to show when I get within the proximity of a scanner. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that thing right now....

As a farewell to Iceland, I went to the hairdressers to get the mess on my head sorted, and here is the result:

It still looks true to form in it's mane-like manner, but more polished and, well, less rooty. The smell of toner is sure to stay with me for at least a week.

Here's what's left of my farewell sweets. I am not going to miss them one bit, as I've eaten nothing but sugar whilst here.

Really really have to stop writing now... I have only 6 hours until I begin my journey back, and I haven't actually started packing....

Cats and Crafts

I have had the pleasure of babysitting two pretty cats for a few days, and as I am all lonely here in Iceland and a big sucker for kitties..I am very much enjoying it. I can safely say I'm doing a much better job than I did with my cat that I had as a 10 year old.

Been super busy otherwise with work, learning how to drive (passed my theory yesterday thank you very much), and some attempted prop making. I have been abusing the photocopier we have at work, and have decided that that is a machine that is a complete MUST in my future studio. I could photocopy all day long. I don't really know what will become of my props, but lets just say it involves lush colours, 3D shapes and some good healthy abstraction.

Cold Land Ramblings and Inspirations

I've been in Iceland for 4 weeks now exactly, and all I want to do is go home. I've been taking a few snapshots and currently have 5 films awaiting development, but despite the economic crash, getting this done isn't going to be cheap at all. So.. I'm currently racking my brain over whether to wait, or just go for it, with a blow to my wallet. Is it really worth it for a few snaps? I'm inclined to think so...

Anyway, I've been searching for some inspiration and visual stimulation to ease my homesickness, and here are a couple of photographers who's work I've fallen in love with.

Jonathan Leder:

His body of work really struck me as being wildly cinematic and full of drama or pretense. This is completely different to the way I work now, but reminds me of how I first wanted my photos to come across. I am in no way saying I'm over it, in fact..this is what is missing in my work today. Also, I don't think you can miss the clear sexual message Leder wants to portray. There seems to be a very clear theme throughout his portfolio indeed. Really love it.

Mikael Dahl:

These photos are on the other hand a lot more simplistic, and stylised, which is a lot closer to the way I take photos today. Form, abstraction and composition seem to be his strong assets, and they work to produce some really gorgeous imagery. I'd like more variety though.. just sayin'.

Last, but not least, my good friend Dale Marshall:

Recently I've been so impressed by Dale's work, and I just love looking at it. I guess it's because he takes photos for his own pleasure, and his work is a documentation of his everyday life and not a product of meticulously thought out shoots. Naturally gracing the imagery are his girlfriend and friends, and the thriving London scene in which he surrounds himself. I'm really excited to see what comes next, and I hope he continues to picture his life...despite heavy costs!

Went to the zoo the other day, and took my trusty Minolta with me. Well, I finally have a bag that's big enough to carry the brick. This means it can now come with me everywhere, and I've promised myself to start taking photos more regularly of anything interesting I see.

Anyway, the zoo..was fun, had a really nice day in the rain/sun/rain/sun. It was a well overdue trip since our overriduculouslyexpensive venture to the aquarium last year. I'd say the zoo beat the aquarium hands down. I mean, you actually had a pretty impressive aquarium within the zoo, and it was cheaper (although not by a lot).

Also, if anyone knows anything about why the image quality sucks this bad on blogspot, please tell me how I fix it. My scans look horrible on here.

On another note, I rather impulsively decided to head on down to Iceland for a couple of months to work and learn how to drive (finally) in the summer, so hopefully I'll have some spare time to take photos too. The summers in Iceland are so perfect for me, the weather is beautiful and it's just the right temperature. Although, I'm not sure everyone would agree.

I was on my way to pick up my photos this morning before work and I started feeling really nervous about what they were going to be like for some reason.. the film was so experimental, and I was honestly expecting to hate the result. But I didn't. I am really pleased, and I don't think I've ever had a film before where I liked pretty much all of the photos. This is partly why I've overloaded this blog with tonnes of these pictures, but it's also because I wanted to upload all of the ones I loved, liked, and kind of liked for the models to see.

Well anyway.. these were taken last Monday night in the studio of the lovely miss Jesse, with her and Amy (who I shot last time) modelling. Fez, a friend of ours and a really really talented hair stylist and MUA came later on and did their hair, (which you can't see very clearly because of all the double shots, but trust me it was hot) so we were all pretty much set. But me being me had no idea where the charger for my DSLR was, so with a dead battery I had to make do with the only option left.. my trusty, yet crappy, point and shoot minolta brick. Like I said earlier, I didn't know what was going on with it, as it has no settings other than flash on/off, but sometimes it just performs miracles. This means that everyones effort hadn't gone wasted, and we have achieved some lovely shots in the end of it all. So with many many thanks to my talented collaborators, here are the shots.

I just wanted to share a few examples of old illustrations/paintings that I did before deciding photography was to be more important.

I don't draw or paint anymore, ever really. This is a shame for many reasons, but mostly because it makes me look pretty stupid for just giving up like that. I mean, I used to draw constantly up to the age of about 17, and now that drive is just totally gone. Sometimes I look at what I've done and feel like it could really go in some interesting directions..and then I remember how frustrating I find the whole process and I've already given up. And that's what I really love about photography.. it's so forgiving and you can be as meticulous or free as you wish. Not that you can't be with drawing or painting..but it's probably more that I like to let myself mess up when it comes to photography. Makes it personal without looking like shit. Well, for the most part anyways!

So, I still have this fantasy in the back of my head that I will start drawing, and god forbid, even painting again..but instead of making me angry and frustrated, it will make me happy once again. Dream on Lazy.

I have a couple of films I'm getting developed this week that are very experimental. I have no idea what they'll be like, which is exciting and scary at the same time! I'm just hoping I'll have something to work with.

Kind of loving these UES hi-tops...but is it enough to make me fall in love with trainers all over again?
Oh yes, but kind of not. I think since ditching the sneaks and adopting more feminine footwear, my wardrobe has done a complete 180, and my style has become too girly, and cutesy (for the most part.) I do really miss the comfort of trainers though, and the way I'd be able to wear some pairs for years, without them completely falling apart.

But yeah, I don't think I would say no to these..they'd be brilliant for a little juxtaposition in the ol' closet. I think I like the messy chain/lace ratio the most ...

Cat Power is probably my favourite lady in music..no question. Recently (for a while actually), I've been going backwards, listening to all the old music I used to listen to years ago, and remembering how much I love it. Miss Marshall is a bit of an odd one out for me because her music is just so intense and emotional..but her voice is just so amazing. Her persona is interesting too..like a character from a low budget indie film about crazy self destructive but lovable teens.

I have also been lusting over fingerless leather gloves like she's wearing above ^ but where could I get such a pair? Ebay only conjures up cheap looking versions, and internet shopping is too complicated for someone like me.

Anyway, I desperately need to get back in the photography game..I have been far less than active recently, to say the least. I can't tell why... I have ideas, the time, and willing models. No excuse! I promise I'll get on it.

So, I've finally lost my two year battle to get into London College of Fashion. I've worked so so hard, and I really feel like I deserved a place..but I don't think this was meant to be for me. I have a place at a really awesome uni, and even if I didn't dream of going there, I still think it could be really great.

I'm really sad right now, but I'm certainly not going to let that stop me. Good things don't come easy! This whole university process showed me that you definitely can't plan your life, even if you have been trying since you were a little girl..things just have their own ways of working out. And isn't it all more worth it when you can say you really worked hard for it?

From now on my only plan in life is just to be oh so successful at what I do, and be happy...who cares how it happens, as long as it does eh.

Amidst my 4am sad rambling, I've rediscovered this song that made me fall in love with Sunset Rubdown. I'm always blown away, I love them so much. I was trying to find a youtube video that wasn't going to ruin it, I'd rather there was no visual but hey, enjoy...

I haven't felt this way about mens shoes since the 80's comeback brought us an abundance of amazing hi-tops, leaving me drooly mouthed and longing for man sized feet to replace my size 36 stumps. This used to be a big problem for me, back in the day when I couldn't walk in heels and all I could dream about was mens fashion.

These sandal boots by Raf Simon for Dr Martens are just candy to my eyes, and I would gladly give up half of my shoe collection for a pair of these in 36s! Yum!

This post is loong overdue, and I don't why I've been putting it off for so long. It's probably because I've become increasingly lazy since acquiring a horrible little job, which is also why I've got a bunch of concepts and photo ideas piling up without being used.

But anyways, I've gotten to know a great little ginger lady called Jesse, who also happens to be an awesome designer. She did all the styling, and designed the lovely lacy top, and white architectural hoodie. We have lots more ideas, so hopefully we'll be getting some stuff done very soon!

The first image is a photo from a black and white film that took 3 weeks to develop and cost me £10!! The film sucked, which is the worst part, and that's why I had to be creative with the post processing..but I don't even know if I can use the rest of the pictures, it's that bad.

Had two evening shoots last week with a very beautiful Grecian!

For the first shoot I wanted to carry on with the theme of my previous one with Nuala, using the 'pop' element..but I guess it didn't quite go to plan. I came unprepared, and even forgot to charge my camera. I thankfully got to borrow a lovely Nikon off Amy's boyfriend, (which made a nice sound when I clicked the shutter). The quality was really good, but I'm not too happy with my editing, I just couldn't get it right. I do still like them, and Amy did a great job..posing through the cardboard was difficult and uncomfortable, but it doesn't show in the pictures at all.

The second shoot took place in a studio that a friend of ours Jesse rents in the centre of Cambridge. It's really spacious, and the whole building is filled with little treasures everywhere that would be really good to use in shoots. I began with an idea in my head that I ended up scrapping completely, and went with something sponteneous using the glass beads that Jesse had bought to use in her designs. I like them, they are light hearted and simple, which is nice when I've been exhausting myself with complicated ideas.

Me and Jesse have so many ideas for shoots, so I hope I'm going to be this busy for a while to come..I'm feeling very inspired at the moment.

So who's got problems?

Found this book today, which I bought for a generous 5p at salvation army! It's filled with awful make up tips and bad photo effects, but that's exactly the sort of thing I look for in a book I bought for nothing.

I found a fair few other books today on mine and Dales big charity shop hunt, and I'll post the images from them onto Guteluft later on. You should check it out anyway, it's constantly being updated, and it is of course the most interesting blog around.

I have been shooting so much lately, and I haven't had much time off to finish my editing...so I'm not going to post them until everything is done, which will take a while. It's been completely exhausting, but will hopefully be worth it when I'm done, and when I get my films back. I'm hoping to be way more active from now on as I'm more driven, and finally have some amazing creative people to work with in this ghost town.

Right, first shoot using my new lights. The beautiful Nuala who has posed for me so many times, and is for sure one of my favourite people to work with.
I still have a lot to learn about studio lighting, but I like what I've got so far. Admittedly there wasn't a lot of variety in my pictures, but here are 3 shots that are each lit a bit differently. (The above picture is just a snap of how the set looked..very quaint.) I would love to be able to do some full body shots in a proper studio.

I was also testing my editing skills, so I've been frantically going through a lot of different tutorials, learning a lot in these past few days. I know it's not perfect, and it's still not how I want it to be, but I love the feeling of having learned something new!

If anyone has any advise on how to get skin to retain detail after airbrushing, message me please!

I was definitely expecting to be more productive in my stay in London, as I had taken all my camera equipment with me. I stayed for nearly a week, and never took more than these snapshots. Big disappointment but it was my own fault, I wasn't really anticipating that everyone would be so busy, I forget that other people actually do productive things with their days! This has, however, prompted me to be more thorough next time round, I must plan everything properly.

I took some photos of Nuala the other day, the first using my new cheeeap studio lights! They looked great on the little camera screen, but they seem to be a bit too over exposed, and I'm finding it difficult to edit them in a way that they won't look tacky. I'm trying though, and I'll post the finished result.

old old oldies

I have spent all day going through what seems like thousands of photos (probably about 1.500), to sort out as part of organising myself, and organising what to go into my portfolio. There were a lot of pointless snaps, which are still very dear to me, and although they obviously can't go into my 'good' folio, I am really tempted to make a little book of them to keep on the side. They look so much less special now that they're on the internet - I think I'm the only one that understands them, and I kind of like that. I am going to make my portfolio so good that they cannot possibly reject me again.

Also..
Rediscovered this gem in my collection..it's possibly my favourite vintage photo, the sheer absurdity... the female is my great aunt who recently passed, she was a very special lady indeed. I don't know who the groping gent is..

And finally,This is a really old photo I took of Nuala when I was first starting out in photography. Well, it's not really that old, maybe 2yrs. I think the photos from this shoot might still be some of my best work..it could have something to do with having done the processing and printing myself in a nice little darkroom. It allowed me to be so much more creative. Getting your photos done at Boots is very..hit and miss, let's say. There are a couple more from this shoot here.

Polaroids from a few days in London, using expired film kindly given to me by Annie and Dale for christmas:) I didn't know what to expect from the films, but it turns out the colours weren't as nice as I had hoped. However, large portions of some of the photos were being stopped from developing at all which was kind of interesting. I have a few films to develop, including one that is probably about a year old from my seemingly broken fisheye.

My first post...I've had this account for a while now, but I couldn't really decide what to do with it. So I'll begin with my latest shoot. It was taken on one of my last day's in Iceland in December...and it was indeed very cold, and very bleak, but I got a few shots out of it in the end. I used a vintage canon 35mm slr that I can't remember the name of, and my canon 350d.

This was my only shoot in Iceland (unfortunately), and the beautiful model is Nadia Lavard, a Danish girl who was kind enough to pose for me, for some posing in return. Here is a photo she took of me:
